Hazel has been a registered nurse for 35 years, with experience working in intensive care units, emergency rooms, nursing education, and hospice. After completing many years of extensive education and degrees, she has spent the last twelve years as an Advance Practice Registered Nurse, Nationally Certified in Family Practice (ARNP, CNP-Family).
An APRN, CNP-Family can assess, diagnose, and treat all ages of people across their lifespans. Her first clinical practice was in a rural community near her hometown, Wagoner, until a local Urgent Care Clinic was introduced. Urgent Care is fast-paced, with teamwork, knowledgeable staff, challenges, learning opportunities, and critical thinking. The clinic is set up to offer non-emergency, non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries that your primary care provider could treat but are not severe enough to go be treated in an emergency room. The wait time is shorter, and the cost is lower than an emergency department. However, there are instances when someone is directed to an emergency room or sent to an emergency room by ambulance for a higher level of care, as urgent care clinics are limited on types of evaluations, treatments, equipment, and supplies, as well as hours of operation. In addition, most urgent cares do not manage chronic illness. They will treat your symptoms, but follow-up care needs to be managed by your primary care provider.
Hazel was raised and attended Wagoner schools. After marrying Rickey Reel from Briartown, Oklahoma, they resided in Jenks for 10 years and Sapulpa for 3 years. With the illness of a family member, they moved back to Wagoner in 1998 with their two daughters, Racheal and Laura. Hazel and Rickey continue to live in Wagoner and have been married for 40 years. Both have the priority of attending church, enjoying gardening, cooking, yard work, traveling, going to resale shops looking for antiques and crafts, spending time with family and friends, and mostly spoiling their four grandchildren. Hazel loves reading, the outdoors, and caring for her horses, Silkie Chickens, and dogs. Rickey describes the horses as mobile pasture ornaments, chickens as Foo-Foo Divas, and dogs as pampered pooches. It does not matter where she is, in the yard or pasture, she is usually surrounded by some or all of them.
To keep up to date on current and new illnesses, treatments, and procedures, Daily, Hazel reads medical journals and articles and enjoys attending seminars throughout the year. She began employment with Coweta Medical Group in the Urgent Care division in June of this year and is very excited about her change. “It is so nice to work close to home, in a rural area, being able to care for people as people and not as numbers or an assembly line as many large corporate facilities do. Never have I been treated with such respect and dignity as a health care provider, in a supportive, nurturing environment as I am presently by peers and coworkers.”
Courtney Gibson is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner at Coweta Medical Group. She attended The University of Oklahoma and graduated with honors in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She began her career as a Registered Nurse in surgery at St. Francis, where she gained experience with routine and emergent surgeries. After surgical nursing, she worked in home health as a Registered Nurse. She then worked as a Registered Nurse Care Manager at an Internal Medicine clinic, where she worked closely with the providers to help manage care and prevent hospitalization of the most complex patients with multiple chronic conditions.
She enjoyed working directly with providers and patients to manage their chronic conditions but felt limited in not being able to solely diagnose and treat these conditions. This is what drove her to return to school to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. She graduated with special distinction from The University of Oklahoma in 2019 with a Master’s degree of Science in Nursing with an emphasis in Family Nurse Practitioner. After graduation, she returned to Internal Medicine and worked for three years. There she gained experience treating and managing multiple chronic, acute, and preventative care. She also performed minor surgical procedures and joint injections. She built a great rapport with her patients; therefore, leaving was a difficult decision, but she was offered the opportunity to work closer to home at Coweta Medical Group. She is accepting new patients and is excited about the opportunity to work here!
